Winch v Snatch Strap

Hey all,

I was browsing the forums and I had a thought. What are the main differences between using a snatch strap recovery and recovery by winch when stuck in the desert? On my first drive with you guys I saw both methods used successfully, but I have been thinking about it ever since, I can’t understand why each was used in each situation.
Are there particular scenarios where each method should be used?

Thanks in advance.

It depends on the situation assessment.

Viking rope is:
  • more powerful
  • lighter
  • easy and safe to use
  • never brakes
Winch is:
  • heavy, efficient winch has the weight up to 100kg on the front. Smaller winches are just for decoration.
  • expensive to purchase
  • metallic rope is dangerous and brakes soon
  • nylon rope can brake too
Advantage for winch against Viking is only in limited space for recovery, next to fences or when more cars are stuck on same place.

Capri,

Thanks, helps me understand a bit better. I assume a winch would be more vaualble when offorading in an environment other than the desert then.
