Desert Cleanup Campaign attracts 850 volunteers achieving 4000 volunteering hours
Abu Dhabi, 17 March 2013: The Desert Cleanup Campaign, conducted by the volunteering programs in the Emirates Foundation for Youth Development Takatof and Sanid, attracted 850 volunteers who could clean up vast areas in the desert within camping areas. Volunteers managed to remove thousands of kilograms of waste, which were transferred to the Centers of Waste Management in various regions where the campaign was implemented.
The campaign was carried out on Friday in Al Khatim in Abu Dhabi, Bida BintMasoud in Al Ain, Al Warqa in Dubai, Al Badayer in Sharjah, and Awafi in Ras Al Khaimah. This call comes for the second consecutive year, as there was a call for a similar campaign last year attended by His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs.
This year, the campaign witnessed a large turnout of volunteers who volunteered 4000 hours. Volunteers expressed their desire to participate in the event to show their ties with the land, and the importance of protecting the environment and keeping it clean and pollution free.
Maytha Al Habsi, Chief Programs Officer in the Emirates Foundation for Youth Development, said that there were two tents in each of the six sites where the campaign took place, one for registering volunteers and giving them the information they need before starting their volunteering task, and the other one contained all the materials and tools that they will need to carry out the tasks assigned to them, including trash bags, tongs, flags, gloves, umbrellas, caps and other needs that will help them fully do their duty.
Al Habsi also pointed out that they provided volunteers with four- wheel drive cars that allow them to go deep into the desert. She also thanked participating Motor Clubs: AD 4x4 Off-Road Club ; almost4x4 Off-Road Club, Al Ain 4x4 Off-Road Club, UAE Off Roaders Club
Al Habsi also stressed that the volunteers were so enthusiastic and persistent while they were performing their voluntary work. She thanked them for the commitment they showed towards their environment and homeland.
She went on to thank also all the agencies that contributed to the implementation of the campaign which include: the Emergency and Public Safety Department, Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters, Traffic and Patrols Department - Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters, Abu Dhabi General Civil Defense Directorate - Community Services Division - Abu Dhabi Municipality, Civil Defense - Ras Al Khaimah, Al Ain Municipality, Waste Management Department - Dubai Municipality, Ras Al Khaimah Municipality, Sharjah Municipality, Ras Al Khaimah Education Zone, Ras Al Khaimah Police General Headquarters, and Sharjah Police General Headquarters.
The volunteer Ibrahim Nasser who participated in cleaning up Bida Bint Masoud said that it is sad that some people do not realize the importance of protecting the environment, and deal with it like a large garbage dump. He stressed that by participating in this campaign, youth are working hard to change this way of thinking among people, In addition, on-site campaigns show the severe damage people are causing to the environment through their negligence.
The volunteer Ahmad Al Jarmen who participated in cleaning up Al Warqa said that the desert is an integral part of the UAE people culture, and their association with it is a component of their lives, personalities and identity. However, it is surprising that with all these affections for this land, some people fail to properly express their commitment towards it. She explained that this campaign for her is not only one-day participation, but an invitation for all to have good manners to protect the surrounding environment, so that we can always enjoy living therein.
