Hi Guys,

I picked up a bit of vibration on the drive back yesterday. It feels like driveshaft vibration to me, had it before when the driveshaft was at the wrong angle.

Could it be sand in a tyre? Its at a specific speed and is under acceleration only i.e. it stops when I lift off the throttle.

Cheers,

Matt

Hi matts and all,

I did tire balance two to three weeks back, and we put white marker on the tire edge at the same location of the wheel valve. Yesterday back of the drive I had vibration on the steering. This morning I checked the marker and found that it was not in front of the valve.

I just would like to ask by the same thread if the tire rotate around the rims when deflated. And most probably this would unbalance the tire... ???

Cheers

Putting the mark on the rim was a great idea Momo. That will definitely unbalance the tyre if its rotated. Deflating certainly makes it more likely, powerful heavy road cars have the same issue, they called it tyre 'pull' in the uk, not sure here. I ever thought that would be an issue, good to know.

Tyres do rotate on the rims, especially on steel rims, when driving the sand. I had the issue, when I was driving earlier on stock steel rims. Always on next day, almost all my tyres were flat standing and they were full of sand. Then I changed it to alloy rims and the effect disappeared.

Regarding the balancing weight on alloy rims, do always use stickers weight, as you will loose standard weights even on the highway. Of course you need to check them regularly. Additionally, after pop-out always visit balancing shop to remove the sand from the tyre and make new balancing.

Hmmmm ok, will visit a shop this evening and get them to check the tyres for sand and see if ive lost a weight somewhere. Otherwise i'm going to have to find out whats come loose to make it vibrate now.

Managed to get under the jeep last night after balancing the tyres didnt solve it. I've located the problem, its a loose (broken) u-joint on the rear driveshaft. At least its a cheap easy fix. 2 of the ujoints have grease nipples on so i have regreased those. The others are sealed units (like the one that's failed). Good reminder to keep things greased that should be greased wouldnt want a driveshaft going in the middle of nowhere and having to drive out with 2wd!

Dear matts,

Thanks for your feedback. Good that you found the car issue. Yes I think so too this part of the car is very exposed and need to be checked and greased often.
