Dear Almosters

my report will be short this time as I had to abort the drive when the action was on wtfsmilie

This was my first drive after the upgrade. As per Almost4x4 tradition, it had been arranged specifically for the new Intermediates. The drive was designed to be quick and aimed to polish side cresting skills and this goal was made clear by Marshall Solmaz when she delivered the briefing. The set up of the convoy was similar to Intermediates exam, with each driver rotating in 2nd car position and between 2 Marshalls: Solmaz , the Lead and Daggerfall , the Observer. Rest of the convoy lead was made by alshamsi_m and Agalon floating and Johanna sweeping

Warm up took just a few mins and @Solmaz started to force quick pace to the drive. Quite quicker than the pace I remember from the 10-, 10+ drives where she was at the front you're kidding, right . However she managed to keep the lines smooth and the drive fluid which is very much her clean style. The high number of 2nd tries was the indicator of how much good and valuable was the learning experience for the drivers.

Unfortunately, right in the middle of this fun my car had a loss of power with check engine light on and the convoy had to stop to assist me melt We managed to reset the check engine by disconnecting the battery and for a few more dunes my car was apparently back ... then the issue happened again and for my safety and not to bother the rest of the drive I had to quit the convoy and got assisted by @Agalon who kindly led me heading back to the paved road TT TT

No need to tell you how much frustrated I felt when I had to abort the drive. First time experience and so annoying. The pain was partially relieved by the kind words of all the others. For the first time I experienced how much valuable is the principle that "nobody is left behind".

A last comment on the drive: during the time I was still in the drive I had started to improve my side cresting skills by controlling the climbing speed and the side cresting speed. In the past I was less fast to climb and too fast on the crest which was resulting in respectively 2nd tries and challenges on keeping car control over the crest. After the many crests we have tried during yesterday drive I was feeling car control getting better and better. Shame I had to quit such big fun and learning experience.

Thanks a lot to @Solmaz for having arranged and led a great drive, to @Daggerfall who always delivers valuable advises, to @AlShamsi who really takes care of all of us in all the drives and he is always there, morning, afternoon, night ... to @Agalon who drove me back to the paved road and thus had to miss part of the fun

Looking forward to meeting you soon

Good morning, I almost didn't make to my first Intermediate drive because my radiator fan wasn't working. I work so hard to try to fix it on my own because the garages don't open on Fridays. At one point I gave up and sent the sad message saying that I wasn't going to make to the drive but after lunch I remember some wisdom words from JockJKU about sand inside the fan and I dismantle my Jeep, cleaned the fan and put all back together, also I did clear the error messages with my OBD2. The fan was working and I drove really fast to the meeting point and i made in time. Coolant temperature was constant 96 degrees ans that is really good.
Getting there it was amazing to see my friends that got upgraded with me and ready to go. The briefing with Solmaz was very good and we learned that newbie level is gone and this drive was going to be hard and fast.
I really enjoy drives with Solmaz leading because she always give us an incredible time and take us to amazing tracks.
I had a chance to be second lead for a little while and I was trying to do my best to keep up the pace with the lead car.
I did had a great time and I'm very honored to be an intermediate. I can't wait to get some more drives.
Thank you so much to all the Marshals, Founders and crew that made this trip so special.
See you next time

Hello Almosters!

I know that it isn't really my place to post a review since I'm a Newbie -5 and I (along with my wife) was a passenger on this drive but I'm way too excited to not write anything about my first Intermediate drive experience

As usual some people showed up quite early for the drive. While we were waiting for everyone to arrive, at one point all of a sudden multiple cars showed up together, it was quite a sight watching a large group driving towards the meeting point!

A short briefing was delivered by Solmaz before we set off, where she explained what would be the focus of the drive, lots and lots of side-cresting. The convoy was led by Solmaz, second lead was set to change continuously, which would be followed by Daggerfall as the observer. Agalon was floating support and Johanna was tasked with sweep and time-keeping while alshamsi_m was floating, sweeping, freestyling, however he felt like :)

The drive started quite mild but it was not even a matter of minutes before things got crazy (from the eyes of a Newbie -5). I did expect the drive to be fast-paced (as it was made quite clear) but technical complexity of the track was astonishing for me. Throughout the drive I had multiple repeated questions and thoughts in my mind like: "how did we just manage to climb here?", "how are we not rolling over right now!?", "I hope we're not going towards that weird curve on that dune!!", "what is happening right now!?!" and so on

It was impressive to watch the convoy succeed without any second tries during the earlier parts of the drive but a bit further into the day second tries had started already (quite a few of them too!) which I think was a good sign because I think this meant that people were being pushed towards their limits and were learning instead of just simply driving in their already comfortable levels.

Unfortunately, we had to part ways early, first with Loca then with RubiKhan90 due to technical issues. There were no accidents or major problems but the decision was made to ensure the safety of both the vehicles and the drivers. Though both Loca & RubiKhan90 did get to enjoy the larger part of the drive nevertheless, which was good!

I had the chance to be a passenger to both alshamsi_m and Solmaz. I can easily say, even being a passenger to them, this was the most thrilling experience I've had and felt like a once-in-a-lifetime moment! I guess there isn't much to say about both drivers as you know them better than me but I'm extremely thankful to both for letting us have this experience!

It was extremely interesting to see/watch Solmaz in her Marshall role, leading is entirely different compared to following and now I understand better what a massive task our Marshals have during the drives! I've to specifically mention this, alshamsi_m has a very different and unique driving technique which has left me wondering how! It constantly felt like we were floating/gliding over the sand while even we were doing kind of extreme things!

It was also great that I had the chance to meet in person with some members whom I knew only from the group chat. Although I already know that this club is more than just a group of people, it's more of a family, getting to know people in real life was even more awesome than I expected. I cannot repeat this enough, I'm still amazed at how everyone in this second-family is so welcoming, friendly, down to earth and genuine!

Many thanks once again to everyone involved in organizing and executing the drive. And of course also for letting us join as passengers for such an unforgettable afternoon! From what she has been telling me, my wife's experience was also very similar to mine so we both now only look forward to the days that I can also reach this level as a driver to experience it with our own vehicle!

It has been over a day now since the drive and I'm actually still riding the high, I guess this would summarize my feelings overall :)

Hello everyone,

it was my first intermediate drive since a few weeks (I am still sad that I missed the All Lead TT TT )
and I was craving badly for sand action.

The introduction drive for our new intermediates (congrats again to all) took place in Al Faqa, a well known area for most of us I guess, and its mid sized (and sometimes sharp) dunes are the perfect training area for side crests.

I was sweeper and time taker, so from the back I had a good overview of the convoy, moving through the dunes like a snake.
Solmaz gave us a fun track - fast and with a lot of side crests, some of them tricky as they had a weird shape, a bumpy climb or a nasty ditch on the other side.

We had some second tries, but no stuck or recovery situations, I think everyone did very well.

Unfortunetly two drivers could not finish the drive due to mechanical issues. Dont worry, there will always be a next drive and in this level everyone spends more time and money in the garage than before.

I personally was happy to see that (for now) all my mechanical and overheating issues are solved. So I could enjoy to the max, it was the perfectly drive to relief stress but not to feel stressed. in love

Have a great week everyone have a nice day

Looking forward to see you all in the sand
BR, Johanna

If it excites you and scares you at the same time, it probably means you should do it.

Hello everyone!

What best to describe this drive is pure awesomeness!

I am truly honoured to be included in this drive as I wasn’t approved as Intermediate driver yet but the Founders and Marshalls allowed me to have this bonus drive. This is an intro drive for the newly promoted Intermediate drivers. This is very important as the level changed from 10+ and Solmaz provided us a very nice track as our leading Marshall! I can say that yes it is a different level of drive from what I was having before. The drive involves a lot of side cresting on small to medium sized dunes. Al Faqah is one of my favourite places and provides a lot of options for us. As Solmaz mentioned during the quick briefing we will be practicing a lot of side cresting. The group did very well, few second tries and no pop outs. We had 2 cars that needs to leave early due to mechanical issues.

I was feeling a bit anxious as I’m not yet Intermediate and I am joining this drive. When we started driving, this feeling went away and I was enjoying riding the dunes. I had my 10 mins as second lead and Daggerfall behind me and it just flew very fast. When I heard my time is over I was a bit surprised as I was enjoying it so much. I was observing how Solmaz is selecting to approach the dune. You’ll really learn a lot if you are in the front of the convoy.

While writing this I’ve got the news that I’m approved in the Intermediate drives. Can’t describe the feeling. This is really an amazing club. You’ll learn not only technical driving on the sand but managing your emotions and overall it will improve your personality. Challenges are there on all angles. Once you overcome it the feeling is amazing. I think this is why we always try to get the seat on each drive :)

Thank you so much again Solmaz for the great lead, Daggerfall for giving us a good learning and observing us during the drive, alshamsi_m for allowing me to participate, Johanna for the sweep and timing us and Agalon for the support and escorting our 2 friends safely back to the tarmac.

Can’t wait for the next drive and see you all again soon! Take care!

Hey Almosters,

As we discussed in the briefing, the aim of this week's drive was to make sure our new intermediates are confident and safe at their side cresting skills and also to get them accustomed to the new pace of the drives. Which all managed well. Skills you build in these drives will be very handy once we start to drive at higher and trickier dunes.

A few problems we have encountered were mostly due to the distance. At this level there is no more fixed distance.
 • Size of the dunes
 • Speed
 • Position in the convoy
 • Obstacle ahead
 • The car and the driver in the front

All above has to be considered while managing the distance.

BTW, this was also an interesting experience for me as it was the first time I had a passenger with me while leading a club convoy. Poor Agalon and Daggerfall (he was my passenger during my all lead) have some experience on how unpleasant I can be in the the driver seat you're kidding, right so I am glad my passengers enjoyed it too. blank

Thanks to all joined and supported.

And a special thanks to our drivers who were collecting the trash at the meeting point that was left by some other people. I was running late for the briefing so I didn't stop to thank you at that moment but don't think it was unnoticed. thumbsup

Hope to see you all soon.

Wheels on fire....what can I say, wow wow wow thumbsup

My first inter drive, I was looking forward to it like a kid in a candy store, yes there was a bit of nervousness, heard stories about inter drives O_O

We met at the meeting point, did the usual drills & got ready for the drive. Solmaz called us together & explained to us what is going to happen & what she had planned for us. alshamsi_m also gave us a few words of wisdom & then it was time to hit the sand.

The plan was similar to the inter exam, second lead rotating every 10 minutes. I was at the back of the convoy, as alshamsi_m put it, the first 5 guys learn, the last 5 guys learn to survive grin . We headed into the dunes & from the word go the pace was fast. Solmaz headed up a big dune & instead of making the usual u-turn at the top she made a left, crested the dune & disappeared over the dune wtfsmilie . This was new for new, but I succeeded in doing the side crest & saw the convoy running in the distance. The pace was nice & fast, radio communication on this level is little with only a second try call now & then, Solmaz was nice & called a few ditches grin . It was not long before we had our first "casualty", a jeep came to a stand still.....air-filter very dirty. Thiago our local jeep macanic came to the rescue & it was not long before we were back on the road. Up, down, sideways... grin . Then Loca called on the radio & said that his Pajero was also "wounded". We stopped & tended to his car, sorted out the issue fairly quick & got going again.

Not long after we started again Loca called that his car was loosing power. He had to call it quits & Agalon escorted him back to the road while we continued. Not long after that the jeep again acted up, Thiago did the best he could, but alshamsi_m said it would be better to head to the road, again Agalon escorted the the jeep to the road. We continued on the drive & when the sun started setting we headed back to the road.

Thank you to Solmaz , alshamsi_m , Daggerfall & Agalon for looking after us & ensuring that we had a safe & awesome drive. Really looking forward to the next inter drive.

Till we meet again in the sand, stay safe.

Greetings

What a great drive! It was my first intermediate drive and I was a bit nervous thinking it would have been a total new world... again... but it was actually a continuum from the exam session and with less stress. Solmaz led the convoy with beautiful lines as usual and we really had time to learn how to do the famous side creating. In my case, after I took a dune too fast and the car started dancing on top of the dune, I realized that the speed was too much. Fearing I couldn’t climb up the dune and to have to abort, I was arriving too fast and didn’t have enough time to stabilize the car on top of the dune before turning down. After that scary dancing of the FJ I decreased the speed once I was comfortable I had enough momentum and I really started to follow the nice lines beautifully designed by Solmaz And I started enjoying the drive more and more and more. As other said we had few technical issues with non-FJ cars but I guess it’s normal. For sure, I will have to think about installing a snorkel as when you surf the dune the send goes all around and the FJ sucks air and sand from the right front wheel space. I found lots of sand on the bottom of the air filter box.

Great great thank you Almost4by4 for bringing me to this level and letting us growing our skills in safety.

Best
