Pathfinder Manual Gear Problem

Hi All,

You all might have met me in one of the rides or must have heard about me
The guy in red pathfinder :028:
The guy in white pathfinder with M/T. ( who flew his car while climbing up the dune):028:

Well I have access to 2 Nissan Pathfinders.

1. 2009 model ( :like: on Sheikh Zayed road) but its not recommended in dessert because of minimum ground clearance.
2. 2004 model with Manual transmission. which is made for desserts but not mine for various reasons.
  • The newbie Driver ( me)
  • The tires (rims are big and tires are not wide)
  • Manual transmission.
Problem 2(a) and 2(b) can be worked at however the 2(c) manual transmission I have having problems with in the dessert not on the highway.

Problems.
  1. Clutch does not release fully everytime and sometimes gets stuck in the middle causing all sorts of power and performance issues.
  2. Shifting from 2nd gear to 1st gear is a nightmare maybe the gear box / clutch problem or the driver problem again as I drive auto throughout the week and then take this manual only on the weekend.
Solutions:
If you guys can put me in the right direction to cope with above mentioned problems would be great.

what I think is
  1. Change the gear box from manual to auto but m afraid if the mechanic is not good I will regret it for rest of my life
  2. Change the car altogether and get same model but with Automatic gear box
  3. Change the clutch plate / fix it in some way so that I only have to worry about dunes and not the gear shifting
Any suggestions or comments are welcomed.

Thank you in advance.

Solutions , ( if you want to keep the car and the manual transmission )

1- Check the upper clutch pump ( the one placed above the clutch pedal ) , check brake oil ( clutch hydraulic system is operated by the same in most cars , others has a separate pump on the engine compartment ) , if they are fine , then you need to check the clutch disc , saucer and bearing .

2- The gearbox for 4WD vehicles is not " synchronized " , which means , if your speed and RPM revs are not suitable ( PROBABLY HIGH ) for the desired down ratio , you will not be able to shift , and if you force it you will damage the gear box.

Driving a manual gearbox vehicle in sand needs practice , its much similar to driving a race car with manual transmission on tarmac . and here are some tips which i hope may help ,

A- use the clutch only for changing gears in standard way , full press and full release . ( no double clutch pressing on same gear , no balancing " 1/2 or 2/3 pedal releasing ....etc ) .

b- don't keep your foot on the clutch pedal while driving . ( foot weight may press partially without you feeling it ) .

c- by watching the terrain ahead ( dunes reading ) you need to determine on which gear to use ( changing from 2nd to 1st gear in the middle of a climb after loosing momentum will get you nowhere but stuck ) .

d- always use 1st gear for descend . ( less speed , more control )

Its possible to fix the 5 speed manual on your TJ 2006 nonetheless there is a lot of points to be considered while doing the transformation process :-
-The 2004 manual 5 speed transmission is very rare & expensive ( around 5 to 6 k)
-There is a lot of work to be done on car ( pedals , shifters , harness change or modification , CPM change ...etc. )
- you really need to find all the parts & a very good mechanic .

Good luck .
